We’ve learned a lot about the history of the Canada Games.  Here are some fun facts that you can share with your family and friends.

Did you know?

  • The first Canada Summer Games where held in 1969 in Halifax/Dartmouth, Nova Scotia
  • The Canada Games are the largest national multi-sport event for young athletes
  • The Canada Games celebrate sport, culture, youth and community and bring together Canada’s ten provinces and three territories
  • The Canada Games are held every two years alternating between summer and winter
  • Since 1967, more then 100 000 athletes have competed at the Canada Games

Winter Games

Sammi at the GazeboAnni and I always play in the snow during the winter months and that’s why we love the Canada Winter Games. Here is what we are looking forward to seeing during the 2011 Halifax Canada Winter Games.

  • The Winter Games involve over 2,800 athletes, 39 young artists, 500 coaches and managers, and 5000 volunteers
  • There are 20 sports on the program of the 2011 Canada Winter Games:

Week 1

Summer Games

Anni at the FountainThe Canada Summer Games happen every four years, each time in a different place in Canada. Did you know that the first ever Canada Summer Games were held in Halifax/Dartmouth? That’s right, it was in 1969 and even though Sammi and I were not born yet, we still hear people say how incredible it was to be a part of the first Summer Games. The last Summer Games were hosted by PEI in 2009 and the next Summer Games will take place in Sherbrooke, Quebec in 2013.

The Summer Games involve over 4,400 athletes, 39 young artists, 450 coaches, 230 managers, 6,000 volunteers.

The 2013 Sherbrooke Canada Summer Games will feature 17 different sports:

  • Athletics
  • Rowing
  • Baseball (male) Anni and Sammi at the Gazebo
  • Soccer
  • Basketball
  • Softball
  • Canoeing (flat water racing, includes canoe & kayak)
  • Swimming
  • Tennis
  • Cycling(mountain bike)
  • Triathlon
  • Diving
  • Volleyball (indoor and beach)
  • Fencing
  • Wrestling
  • Golf
  • Yachting

Canada Games athletes are Canada’s next generation national, international and Olympic champions. We were excited to learn that some of the athletes who have competed at past Canada Games include;

  • Hayley Wickenheiser (1991)
  • Steve Nash (1993)
  • Adam Van Koeverden (1997)
  • Sidney Crosby (2003)
