August, 1969: most remember it as the “Summer of Love”, but for the people of Halifax/Dartmouth and our nation’s best young athletes, it was the Summer of Love for Sport! The first Canada Summer Games were held in Halifax/Dartmouth in 1969. Records were set, goals were realized and new dreams took flight. The impact is still felt in the ’69 Games venues - like Centennial Pool, Huskies Stadium and Lake Banook. Brenda Baker (Arsenault) I remember back in 1969 when the Games first opened in Halifax, Nova Scotia, my home town. I was 15 years old and excited because I was performing in the Opening Ceremonies... France Provencher It was with pride and joy that I competed in the first Canada Summer Games in Track and Field. I ran the 100-metre race and made it to the quarter-finals and semi-finals... Paula Currie I was 6 during the Canada Summer Games in 1969, which correct me if I’m wrong, was the very first summer games in Canada... Diane Jones Konihowski I feel very blessed to have competed in the first Canada Winter Games (1967) in Quebec City as a volleyball player... Gloria Costello As a 17 year old in 1969, I had only been to Halifax on 2 other occasions. I caught for a women’s fast pitch team from Elderban... Hank LeClair Forty years ago in Ottawa, I was an Information Officer for Health Canada who at the time was responsible for Fitness & Amateur Sport... Judi Rice As one of the youngest athletes on the NS Field Hockey Team, (17yrs) and being the first time I was going to represent my Province...
