Take a trip back in time with 1969 Games stories!
Since 1967, the Canada Games has touched hundreds of thousands of lives, each with their own unique story to tell. So we want to know – what’s your Games story?
Tell us your Games Story seeks stories from former and current athletes, coaches, volunteers, cultural ambassadors and anyone else who has been involved in or experienced the Canada Games. Games Stories speak to the lasting human legacy of the Games and how the spirit of the Games affects us all. Stories contributed will be featured on this page with new stories and content being added from now until the 2011 Games.
Kathy Colaiacovo
Dartmouth, Nova Scotia
In 1979, 1 month after I turned 12, I headed to Brandon Manitoba with my dance partner to represent P.E.I. as figure skaters in novice dance. Being so young, the entire process was overwhelming – from all the training, to the extra on and off ice team practices, and finally flying halfway across Canada. I still remember all the noise at the opening ceremonies and after that, much is a blur. It was a very busy week filled with meeting many new people and watching tons of sports. We also got autographs galore, trading pins and clothes from the other athletes.
In retrospect, I wish cameras were more advanced and readily available then; as much of what I remember is in my head. I encourage all athletes to have fun, talk with other athletes and most of all do your best in your sport. I suspect the memories you take home will have more to do with the people and the experiences than the medals and your final standing!
Tell us about yourself
I presently live in Dartmouth with my husband and 3 children. I am a small business owner of a virtual assistant business and spend much of my free time driving my children to hockey, basketball and football practices and games.
What will you bring the Halifax 2011 Canada Games?
I will bring my kids to watch the events so they can see the skills, abilities and accomplishments of our athletes from Canada.
Submissions will be accepted in English and French and must be between 250 and 500 words long. Include photos, if possible, and don’t forget to tell us a bit about yourself as well.
