I competed at the Kamloops Canada Games in 1993. I certainly look back at that summer with a big smile on my face. My Ontario teammates were awesome and went on to many bigger things (Olympics, World Championships, Pan Pac/Am Games, Commonwealth Games).
It was such a great event that it's hard to pick just one memory or story. But if I had to say the coolest part about the games was being teamed up with a local school classroom. They sent us good luck cards and posters that we put up in our rooms. They treated us like rock stars!
Years later, once I had gotten into the next stage of my life, I was contacted by one of those students (who was now a competitive swimmer too). It was remarkable to hear her point of view that she was amazed that we would respond to her notes and keep writing after the games were over. I had to tell her that I was appreciative of what she had done – making us all feel very special. It was a feeling that I will never forget as long as I live.
I hope this program is still going on with Canada Games as it was my favorite part. Although having Team Ontario win was a very close second! Go Ontario!!!!
I am currently working in the Sports field as a Project Manager for a marketing company. We specialize in sponsorships, naming rights, and premium seating sales. We are lucky enough to work with some great arenas and teams across the country – who knows, maybe one day I'll get to represent Canada Games again!
