Producer, Performers, Get in the Games

Two major milestones in the cultural components of the Halifax 2011 Canada Games were marked today, July 8, with the announcement of the producer for the opening and closing ceremonies and an open call for performers.

The 2011 Host Society named Patrick Roberge Productions as the producer of the opening and closing ceremonies.

Among many sporting and cultural events, the company produced the opening and closing ceremonies for the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games and two previous Canada Games: the 2007 Whitehorse Winter Games and the 1989 Saskatoon Summer Games.

"We are committed to creating a large-scale community event that will celebrate youth, culture, and sport while capturing the spirit and unique traits of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Canada," said creative director and president Patrick Roberge.

The Halifax Metro Centre will be the site of the nationally broadcast opening ceremony on Feb. 11 and the closing ceremony on Feb. 27.

In preparation for the ceremonies and other Games cultural events, both before and during the Games, the Host Society is seeking a variety of talented performers from Nova Scotia and beyond.

From music to dance and non-traditional performing arts such as circus acts, interested artists are invited to answer the call for performers by reviewing the submission guidelines and applying online at canadagames2011.ca/artists.

The deadline for applications is Friday, Sept. 10, at 4 p.m.

Submissions will be judged by groups of industry professionals.

Scott Long, festivals team lead, for the Games and executive director of Music Nova Scotia said the call provides people from the performance community with a chance to get involved in the Games.

"The Canada Games are about much more than sport, they also represent an opportunity to showcase artistic talent and Nova Scotia culture on a national stage."

The 2011 Games will feature a variety of performance opportunities including the Canada Games festivals program, opening and closing ceremonies, receptions, and rallies exhibiting a wide range of interests from the traditional to the cutting edge.
