Hockey

Sport - Mens Hockey

Sport Description

It’s hard to imagine a Canada Winter Games without hockey. In fact, men’s hockey has been part of every Canada Winter Games including the inaugural games held in Quebec City in 1967, where Alberta battled BC for the gold. Women's hockey was included for the first time at the Canada Winter Games in Prince Edward Island in 1991.

What better place to host hockey than Halifax, which has been host to national and world championships time and time again.

Men’s hockey will be co-hosted at the Halifax Metro Centre and Dartmouth Sportsplex during week 1 of the 2011 Games, while women’s hockey will take place at the same venues during week 2.

Fun Facts

Windsor, NS (just 30 minutes from Halifax) is widely accepted as the birthplace of the sport.

Sidney Crosby grew up playing hockey just over the bridge from Halifax, in Cole Harbour, NS (he of course went on to compete at the 2003 Canada Games, and from there, well, you know the rest of the story…)
