Sport - Short Track Speed Skating

Sport Description

Long track speed skating has been part of the Canada Games since the first Canada Winter Games in 1967 in Quebec City with the exception of the 1987 and 1991 Canada Winter Games.

For the 2011 Games, short track speed skating will take place in week 1 at St. Margaret’s Centre. Long track will also take place during week 1, on the Halifax Common.

Fun Facts

Netherlands is the birthplace of speed skating. The first known skating competition is thought to have been held in 1676.

Canada's first recorded ice skating race took place on the St. Lawrence River in 1854 when three British army officers raced from Montréal to Québec City.
