Target Shooting

Sport - Shooting

Sport Description

Target shooting was first popular in English-speaking countries, notably England and the United States, as well as Ireland and South Africa. Target shooting was on the program of the very first Canada Winter Games in 1967 in Quebec City. It appeared again in the 1973 Summer Games (New Westminster-Burnaby, BC) and 1977 Canada Summer Games (St. John’s, NF) but then fell off the program until the 1991 Canada Winter Games in PEI.

Fun Facts

Target shooting evolved into a sport during the 19th century when the industrial revolution made hunting for food less necessary for many people.

The National Rifle Association (USA) was formed in 1871 and provided the impetus for the development of shooting as an organized form of sport in the United States. In 1932 The Shooting Federation of Canada was formed.
